currently count more than 400 breweries and over 1,600 different beer brands.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  These include major international breweries, small family breweries, urban breweries, modern craft breweries, lambic producers and breweries directly connected to abbeys.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  As a result, there is no single typical Belgian brewery and no single typical Belgian beer flavour.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBelgian beer culture is UNESCO heritage\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  In \u003cstrong\u003e2016\u003c\/strong\u003e, Belgian beer culture was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  This recognition explicitly goes far beyond the beer in the glass.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Brewing knowledge, cafés, restaurants, beer festivals, education, food pairing and the social role of beer are also part of this culture.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  It is therefore a living beer culture in which tradition and continuous innovation exist side by side.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eMore than one Belgian beer style\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The term \u003cstrong\u003eBelgian speciality beer\u003c\/strong\u003e is useful as a broad collective term, but it still says relatively little about what you are actually going to drink.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Westmalle Tripel, Orval, Saison Dupont, Duchesse de Bourgogne and Oude Geuze can all be described as Belgian speciality continue to exist alongside one another.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The Belgian Brewers distinguish four major groups: \u003cstrong\u003ebottom fermentation, top fermentation, spontaneous include many Tripels, Dubbels, strong blonde beers, Saison, abbey beers and Trappist beers.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The yeast used can produce a remarkable amount of flavour.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Banana, pear, apple, clove, pepper and other fruity or spicy associations can therefore develop without those fruits or spices actually being added to the beer.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBelgian Tripel\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  \u003cstrong\u003eTripel\u003c\/strong\u003e is one of the best-known Belgian beer categories.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  A Tripel is generally golden-blonde to light amber, relatively high in alcohol and top-fermented.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Despite alcohol breweries.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The name Tripel does not tell you exactly how sweet, bitter or strong a beer will taste; every brewery uses its own recipe, yeast and balance.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eTripel does not mean three times as much malt\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  There are many simple explanations surrounding terms such as Dubbel, Tripel and Quadrupel that are not always historically accurate.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  A Tripel, for example, is not literally a beer made with three times as much malt as a standard beer.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Over time, these names developed into categories and product names within Belgian monastic and brewing traditions.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  It therefore makes more sense to focus on the current style and the actual alcohol percentage of the beer.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBelgian Blond beer\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Those looking for a more accessible starting point will often arrive at \u003cstrong\u003eBelgian Blond\u003c\/strong\u003e.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Blond beer is generally golden in colour and less powerful than a strong Tripel.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Malt, fruity yeast and restrained hop bitterness often form the foundation.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Even within beer\u003c\/strong\u003e.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Duvel is probably the best-known international example.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The beer is strong, pale in colour, highly carbonated and relatively dry.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  A beer therefore does not need to contain the word Tripel in its name to be comparable in alcohol percentage and intensity, or even stronger than various Tripels.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eDuvel and the Belgian strong blond tradition\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Duvel became an important example of how a very strong beer can still be golden-blonde, dry and elegant.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Classic Duvel contains 8.5% alcohol and combines a light malt base with Belgian fermentation, strong carbonation and hops.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Later additions included Duvel 6.66 and various Tripel Hop editions.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  One important detail: \u003cstrong\u003eDuvel Tripel Hop is not automatically a Tripel in terms of beer style\u003c\/strong\u003e. The name originally referred to the use of a third hop variety.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBelgian Dubbel\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  \u003cstrong\u003eDubbel\u003c\/strong\u003e generally sits on the darker side of the Belgian beer spectrum.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Brown and reddish-brown colours, caramel, bread, dark fruit and fruity fermentation character are common.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Bitterness usually remains restrained, allowing malt and yeast sufficient space.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Well-known examples can be found at Westmalle, various abbey breweries and other traditional Belgian producers.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBelgian Quadrupel\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Even stronger are many beers sold as \u003cstrong\u003eQuadrupel\u003c\/strong\u003e.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  These strong dark ales can exceed 10% alcohol and often revolve around caramel, raisins, plums, dried fruit, bread crust and alcohol warmth.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  La Trappe introduced the product name Quadrupel in the Netherlands, but Belgian breweries now produce many beers that fall within the same broad category.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Examples such as Rochefort 10 and Val-Dieu Grand Cru demonstrate that not every comparable strong dark ale necessarily displays the word Quadrupel prominently on the label.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBelgian abbey beer\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Belgium also has a long tradition of \u003cstrong\u003eabbey beer\u003c\/strong\u003e.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Abbey beer is not a specific flavour or beer style.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  An abbey brand can, for example, produce Blond, Dubbel, Tripel or a completely different type of beer.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The term primarily says something about the relationship between the beer brand and an abbey tradition.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eRecognised Belgian Abbey Beer\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Certain Belgian abbey beers carry the \u003cstrong\u003eRecognised Belgian Abbey Beer\u003c\/strong\u003e label.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  This label sets requirements regarding the historical and contractual relationship between the brewery and the abbey.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  A beer can therefore be produced by a commercial brewery and still be a recognised abbey beer when there is a genuine historical and legal relationship with the relevant abbey.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Val-Dieu, Paix Dieu and several other well-known Belgian brands belong to this broader abbey beer world.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eTrappist is not a beer style\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  \u003cstrong\u003eTrappist beer\u003c\/strong\u003e is often mentioned alongside Dubbel, Tripel and Quadrupel, but technically Trappist is not a beer style.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  It primarily concerns \u003cstrong\u003eorigin and production under the responsibility of a Trappist abbey\u003c\/strong\u003e.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Two Trappist beers can therefore taste completely different.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Orval, Westmalle Tripel and Rochefort 10, for example, all have a Trappist background while representing completely different beers.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat does Authentic Trappist Product mean?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The well-known \u003cstrong\u003eAuthentic Trappist Product\u003c\/strong\u003e label has specific requirements.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Production must take place within or in the immediate surroundings of the abbey and under the supervision of the monastic community.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Profits are intended for the maintenance of the community and for social, charitable or solidarity-based causes.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The label therefore says something about authenticity and origin, rather than indicating that every beer is made according to the same recipe.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBelgian Trappists\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Belgium is home to several internationally famous Trappist beers.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  \u003cstrong\u003eChimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren\u003c\/strong\u003e are among the best-known names.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Each abbey has its own recipes, yeast strains and traditions.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  This is precisely why “Trappist” is a poor description of flavour: an Orval and a Rochefort 10 have almost nothing in common in terms of flavour profile.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWestmalle\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Westmalle occupies a special position in the development of Belgian abbey and Trappist beers.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The current brewery produces, among others, \u003cstrong\u003eExtra, Dubbel and Tripel\u003c\/strong\u003e.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Westmalle Tripel from 1934 in particular became an important reference point for the modern Tripel category.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Westmalle Dubbel represents the darker, maltier side of the range.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eRochefort\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The Trappists of Rochefort are particularly known for powerful dark beers.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  \u003cstrong\u003eRochefort 6, Rochefort 8 and Rochefort 10\u003c\/strong\u003e differ in be.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The range extends from the lighter Chimay Gold to Red, Tripel, Blue and stronger or barrel-aged editions.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  This allows someone to explore several Belgian beer categories without switching abbeys.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The familiar colour names on the labels have become almost as recognisable as the official product names.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eOrval\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Orval does not fit neatly into the simple Dubbel-Tripel-Quadrupel sequence.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The famous 6.2% Trappist beer is heavily hopped, undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle and, partly due to \u003cstrong\u003eBrettanomyces\u003c\/strong\u003e, develops a changing character as the beer ages.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  When young, Orval can be remarkably hoppy and fresh.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Over time, drier, earthy and slightly wild aromas become more pronounced.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  It is therefore a good example of why Belgian beer is better explored through individual breweries and techniques than through simple colour categories.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eSaison from Belgium\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  \u003cstrong\u003eSaison\u003c\/strong\u003e is strongly associated with Wallonia and the historic farmhouse tradition.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The style is often dry, highly carbonated, in addition to Saison Dupont, produces stronger beers such as Moinette and Avec les Bons Vœux.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Saison Dupont particularly demonstrates how dry and aromatic Belgian beer can be without requiring enormous quantities of modern American hops.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eBelgian witbier\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Another completely different Belgian tradition is \u003cstrong\u003ewitbier\u003c\/strong\u003e.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Wheat gives these beers their pale colour and often their natural haze.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Coriander and orange peel are used in many Belgian examples, although recipes vary by brewery.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Witbier is generally much lighter and fresher than Tripel, Dubbel or Quadrupel.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWitbier is not Weizen\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Belgian Witbier and German Weizen are both strongly associated with wheat, but they are not the same.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  German Weizen relies heavily on its characteristic wheat beer yeast, which can produce banana and clove aromas.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Belgian Witbier often uses a different yeast approach and can additionally contain spices such as coriander and citrus peel.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Anyone drinking the two side by side will therefore notice a clear difference despite their shared wheat base.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eSpontaneous fermentation in Belgium\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  One of Belgium's most distinctive traditions is \u003cstrong\u003espontaneous fermentation\u003c\/strong\u003e.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  In this process, a selected brewer's yeast is not simply added to the cooled wort.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  During cooling, the wort comes into contact with microorganisms from the surrounding environment, after which a complex fermentation and maturation process follows.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The most famous beer family produced through this process is lambic.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat is lambic?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  \u003cstrong\u003eLambic\u003c\/strong\u003e is closely associated with the Pajottenland and the Senne Valley around Brussels.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Traditional lambic is brewed with a significant proportion of wheat, fermented spontaneously and matured for an extended period.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The base beer can be consumed almost without carbonation or used to create other beer products.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  Oude Geuze and Oude Kriek are among the best known.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eOude Geuze\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  \u003cstrong\u003eOude Geuze\u003c\/strong\u003e is created by blending traditional lambic of different ages.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  After blending, secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\n  The result can be extremely dry, complex and distinctly sour, with fruity, earthy aromas and flavours shaped by
